Now the ANC is over – part two

I thought it would be interesting to take a detailed look at the match my partnership played against the winning NSW team – session four of the first round robin.

From board one it looked like the best bridge was being played in Tas vs ACT.

One thing Simon and I did in the months leading up to the interstate was bid maybe 100 hands which were 20-22 opposite 6 card suit and 8-12, so we were ready for this one. Alas we were sitting EW and could merely observe that it was a likely pickup for our side as Gumby-Lazer languished in game:

West North East South
Pass Pass 1
Pass 1 Pass 2NT
Pass 3 Pass 3
Pass 4 All Pass

Gumby meant the sequence to be a slam try but it wasn’t clear to Lazer. Flat board when Gold-Sarten were also unable to bid the good slam.

West North East South
2 Pass 4
All Pass

2 showed a weak two and five or six hearts. Gold decided not to investigate.

Delivera-Robinson, one of Australia’s very best pairs for a few years now, bid it thus:

West North East South
2 Pass 2NT
Pass 3 Pass 3
Pass 3NT Pass 4
Pass 4 Pass 4NT
Pass 5 Pass 6
All Pass

3: weak 2 in hearts
3: forcing
3NT: ace or king outside hearts
4: cue
4: cue
4NT: RKCB

Board two and and it was only Beck-Tyson for Tasmania who bid the EW cards to the top spot:

7NT picked up an IMP – another time it would have picked up the lot when the 7H bidders suffered a club ruff at trick one.

Board 4 was the first big swing in our match.

At our table:

West North East South
Pass 1 1 2
3 Pass 4 4NT
Pass 5 All Pass

In the other room:

West North East South
1 1 2
3 All Pass

Is the rumour true? Had the opponents laced Leigh Gold’s weeties with valium that morning? Would NSW try such dirty tactics???? The next board wasn’t much different.

At the time we thought nothing of board 5 as Gumby-Lazer strolled easily into the good slam:

West North East South
1 Pass 2
Pass 3 Pass 4
Pass 4 Pass 4
Pass 5 Pass 6
All Pass

4: modified minorwood
4: minimum
4: keycard ask

But with our teammates subsiding in 3NT in the other room that was 12 out.

West North East South
1 Pass 2
Pass 3 Pass 3NT
All Pass

More to come…
