Those pesky eights and nines

This was the problem I posed on Friday:

Opening lead: H3 playing 4ths which goes to the king.
What’s the plan?

Let’s suppose that you win a heart, first or second, and lead a club and LHO plays the eight. Is that of the least significance?

(a) if LHO is a strong player
(b) if LHO is a weak player

In either case, do their signals matter – reverse count and odds and evens.

Soon enough those eights and nines jumped up to bite me on the leg again. A few days later, semi-final of the Pennant in Melbourne. It is now known that the team which beat us went on to win the final and now competes in the playoff to be this year’s Victorian Open team. You’d have to say this was a great result by the winners – my partnership can’t remember the last time we were not in the final of the Pennant or the playoff for the State team. Maybe 10 years ago?

At any rate, it was especially pleasing to see Hayden Blakeman finally achieve a result which he has been itching to get for some time now. I might mention in passing that he is the sort of player who makes me wary of selectors. It is interesting that there are some who think young players will tend to be overlooked in the selection process. I think the ones most at risk are more like Hayden. Not young, not new to the scene, but of great potential. Players like Hayden tend to be invisible.

He surely made life hard for me on this hand. It was board 2 and we’d bid a slam on board 1 which was likely to be a pickup….

It looks like you have to play a heart to the queen next? I did, RHO following with the nine. Next Hayden shifted to a low club, RHO contributing the four. Now what?
