Deciding at the six level.

I had another hand in mind for today, this is more relevant to recent discussion. It was given to me yesterday. (As usual comments are suppressed on this post for now.)

Not vul vs vul, sitting West you hold:

sA64
h1Q1032
d1A10872
c5

and before you know it, you are making your first call at the six level:

West….North….East….South

………..1C……..3S…….6C

    double – to let partner know I have some defence, D and H are sitting over dummy which is the hand likely to have the most distribution

    What’s the vul? Doesn’t really matter, I pass.

    Anything could happen (including our side being cold for 6S) but
    * It’s easy to see 6C going down
    * 6S will usually go down about a game-sized amount (but may be small or large off)
    * I don’t like conceding a solid minus in a crap-shoot auction

    I don’t X. I reckon it’s an 11-12 trick hand for them, so the value-odds for X aren’t in my favour.

    Psychologically, taking a bid here tells the opponents “you’ve got me”, while passing says “you’re just some random guy”. Even if they make, they’re just some pair of turkeys who got lucky.

    Pass. Pass. Pass. Pass.
    Is that a convincing argument or what ?
