Dick on Defence 3

It’s teams and you pick up:

s103
h1KQJ64
d1AQ1064
c4

Sitting West, the auction proceeds:

West…….North…….East…….South
…………..1D*………..Pass……2C**
2H………3C…………..5H………6C
All Pass

* Precision-style.
** 2C is canape.

So, what’s it to be? Are all you ace leaders letting it ride? It reminds me of those multiple choice exams. Surely it’s time for b, or c, or d….

I’ll go passive with HK. We’ve made them guess, maybe they’re wrong.

I quite like that as a line of logic. Why put your guess on top of their guess….pity it’s the wrong answer!

One explanation for the auction is that south has diamond values.

3 problems in a row where you have to bang down an ace? Naaahh.

I wonder what NS do with 55 in the blacks in response to 1D. Do they bid clubs first so they can show 5S next? Anyway, South has spades covered, and may be thinking of them as a source of tricks.

Is North balanced? Doubt it – he would be 11ish and broadly unappealing. I think xx54 is more likely, maybe 4144. Do I really want to be setting up North’s diamond suit?

Is a diamond ruff potentially available? Doubt it – 2-3 small diamonds is not going to appeal to South.

What trick that we might have is most likely to disappear? South may have been trying the inferential 6C with, say, 5314 and has 2 bullets missing. Even if South is like 5305, maybe partner has a potential club trick like Qxx but spade length, so if we don’t cash our heart now, it goes.

    I lead HK like a wood-duck.
